Raw earth is a natural, traditional, local and ecological building material.
It is also a prominent component of the building cultures in the Mediterranean.

With the MediTERRE project, we want to encourage the promotion of raw earth as building material throughout the Mediterranean basin through exchange, cooperation and communication.

Raw earth and the Mediterranean.

The Mediterranean, 22 countries bordering the same sea. A climate and land that gave us olive oil, wine, bread but also raw materials to build. Here, like everywhere, men and women used what they had under their feet: EARTH and stone.

Earth is a raw material used for building materials. It is a major component of constructional cultures around the world (more than a third of the world's population lives in raw-earth habitat). There are construction systems that have been exclusively or partially composed of raw earth in all countries of the Mediterranean basin for millennia.
From the second half of the 20th century, the use of raw earth for construction tends to disappear in favour of industrial materials. This evolution of building practices has led to phenomena whose consequences are disastrous from an ecological and social viewpoint as well as cultural.

The people behind the MediTERRE project:

We are three earthen professionals who share a common passion for the Mediterranean. We decided to create the MediTERRE network following our meeting at the Earth Architecture DSA of the National School of Architecture in Grenoble in 2014 (CRAterre-ENSAG). We enjoy working together to develop projects combining eco-construction and preservation of local Mediterranean identities:
The MediTERRE website was realised by a professional wordpress developer: Petit (à) Petit
